Prayer as the gift of God’s presence

Holy SpiritMaryPresence

The essential idea

Prayer is not solely our initiative: God first calls us into communion. The Holy Spirit sustains us even when we cannot find words.

Questions and explanations

Must prayer always feel special?

No. Feelings change. Faithfulness rests on God’s presence, not on continual emotional intensity.

How does the Spirit help us?

The Spirit leads us to Christ, purifies our intentions and teaches trust in the Father. Even weak prayer can be real.

Why does Mary’s prayer matter?

Mary responds to God with trust and praises divine mercy. Her example joins listening to the Word with daily life.

What if I cannot pray for long?

A short attentive prayer is better than a long distracted one. Consistency matters more than the number of words.

Scripture references

Rom 8:26-27, Lk 1:46-55

In everyday life

Parents of small children may have little quiet time. Prayer amid daily care can still be sincere communion with God.

For reflection

  1. What fear makes trust in God difficult?
  2. How does Mary’s example teach me to listen?

A step to take

Read Luke 1:46–55 and name three things for which you are grateful.
