Liturgy: the prayer of the whole Church
The essential idea
Liturgy is not a priest’s private performance. In it Christ gathers the Church, and the faithful together praise God, hear the Word and share in the Church’s worship.
Questions and explanations
Who celebrates the liturgy?
Christ is the principal celebrant. The bishop or priest presides visibly while the assembled community participates according to its vocation.
Why is Sunday worship important?
Sunday celebrates Christ’s Resurrection and calls the Church together. Faithful participation forms gratitude, commitment and communion.
Why is Scripture proclaimed?
The Word is not a preliminary announcement. In hearing Scripture, the Church encounters Christ teaching and calling us to conversion.
What does active participation mean?
It begins with attention and prayer of the heart. Singing, responses, silence and Communion when properly prepared are different forms of participation.
Scripture references
Acts 2:42, Heb 12:22-24
In everyday life
When a visitor enters the chapel, help them follow the liturgical text without expecting prior knowledge. Hospitality supports the Church’s prayer.
For reflection
- Do I pray with the assembly rather than merely watch?
- Which Gospel word touched me today?
A step to take
At your next Divine Liturgy, join the common responses and listen carefully to the Gospel.
In the UGCC tradition
Our parish celebrates the Byzantine Divine Liturgy. The rite of St John Chrysostom and the people’s responses are available in the separate liturgical reader, which this course does not alter.
