The seven sacraments

SacramentsGraceChurch life

The essential idea

The sacraments are acts of Christ in the Church through which God gives grace. They accompany Christian initiation, growth, healing and service.

Questions and explanations

Which sacraments does the Church recognise?

Baptism, Chrismation/Confirmation, Eucharist, Reconciliation, Anointing of the Sick, Holy Orders and Matrimony. Together they shape Christian life.

Why can grace not be bought?

Grace is a gift, not merchandise. Donations for parish needs are not payment for God’s action.

Do sacraments work mechanically?

Their power comes from Christ, not participants’ moods; yet openness to grace and proper preparation matter for fruitful reception.

Why do sacraments matter to the community?

They initiate into community, restore communion and strengthen families and service. God meets individuals without isolating them from the Church.

Scripture references

Jn 20:21-23, 1 Cor 4:1

In everyday life

For a family welcoming a child, Baptism is not merely a beautiful ceremony; it begins a shared journey of faith.

For reflection

  1. Which sacrament calls for more careful preparation in my life?
  2. How do I support someone beginning the journey of faith?

A step to take

Ask a priest about a sacrament you want to understand better.

In the UGCC tradition

In the UGCC’s Byzantine tradition, “Holy Mystery” expresses the action of God’s grace. The order of initiation differs in some respects from Latin practice.
