God acts through visible signs
The essential idea
We experience the world through bodies, words and gestures. Faith therefore does not reject visible things: in the sacraments, Christ uses signs to communicate invisible grace.
Questions and explanations
What is a sacred sign?
It is a visible action or object that points to God’s action within the Church’s prayer. It is not magic detached from faith.
Why does matter matter in Christianity?
Because the Son of God became human. Water, oil, bread and wine can serve sacramental action because creation is good and God works in history.
Are all religious signs sacraments?
No. Blessings and devotional symbols matter, but the seven sacraments have a distinctive place in the Church’s life.
How do we participate meaningfully?
Attend to prayers, gestures and their connection to Christ. Ask about unfamiliar symbols so outward actions lead towards encounter with God.
Scripture references
Jn 1:14, Mk 7:31-37
In everyday life
Baptism uses ordinary water, yet within the sacrament it serves God’s action. The visible and invisible are thus joined.
For reflection
- Which church symbols do I not yet understand?
- Do I attend to the words of prayer?
A step to take
