Blessings, holy things and the Church year

BlessingsFeastsTradition

The essential idea

The Church sanctifies ordinary time through prayer, feasts and blessings. They remind us that God is present in work, family and history, not only in church buildings.

Questions and explanations

What is a blessing?

A blessing praises God and asks for divine help. It is not a guarantee of an easy life or a way to control events.

Why are Church feasts important?

They let us journey through the saving events of Christ, remember the saints and gather for common prayer.

How is a holy object different from a charm?

Christians do not assign magical power to objects. Icons, crosses and holy water direct us towards God and repentance.

How can feasts be celebrated at home?

Join worship with family prayer, hospitality and care for those who are alone. A feast becomes more than outward custom.

Scripture references

Ps 103:1-5, Col 3:16-17

In everyday life

Inviting a lonely neighbour for a feast-day meal may express the celebration better than an expensive decoration.

For reflection

  1. Which Church feast helps me pray most?
  2. Do my family traditions lead to mercy?

A step to take

Choose an upcoming feast and plan both worship and an act of kindness.

In the UGCC tradition

The UGCC follows the Byzantine liturgical year with feasts of the Lord and Mother of God, fasting seasons and rich hymnography. Check dates against the current Church calendar.
