Baptism, Chrismation and Eucharist

BaptismChrismationEucharist

The essential idea

The sacraments of initiation bring us into life with Christ and his Church. Baptismal water, the gift of the Spirit and Eucharistic communion belong together.

Questions and explanations

What does Baptism give?

In Baptism we share in Christ’s death and Resurrection, receive new life and become members of the Church. It begins, rather than completes, formation in faith.

What is Chrismation?

Through anointing with holy chrism the Church invokes the gift of the Holy Spirit and strengthening for Christian witness.

Why is the Eucharist central?

In Holy Communion the faithful receive Christ’s true Body and Blood. The Eucharist strengthens communion with Christ and the Church and calls us to mercy.

Is preparation for Communion needed?

Yes. Reconciliation, prayer and the discipline of one’s Church matter. Personal questions should be discussed with a priest.

Scripture references

Mt 28:18-20, Acts 2:38-42, Jn 6:51-58

In everyday life

Parents bringing a child for Baptism commit to nurturing prayer, religious education and participation in parish life.

For reflection

  1. What does it mean for me to live as a baptised person?
  2. How do I prepare my heart for the Eucharist?

A step to take

Read Acts 2:38–42 and ask a priest about appropriate preparation for Communion.

In the UGCC tradition

In the UGCC Byzantine tradition, Baptism, Chrismation and first Eucharist are normally celebrated together, including for infants. This differs from common Latin practice while expressing the same Catholic faith.
