Holy Spirit, Church and eternal life
The essential idea
The Holy Spirit gives life to the Church, guides believers into truth and gives diverse gifts for the common good. Christian hope embraces forgiveness, resurrection and life in God’s presence.
Questions and explanations
Who is the Holy Spirit?
The Spirit is the third Person of the Trinity, not an impersonal force. He works in the Church, helps us pray and shapes life according to the Gospel.
Why does the Church exist in the world?
To witness to Christ, celebrate the sacraments and serve people. The Church is God’s people with diverse vocations united in one faith.
Why does the Spirit give different gifts?
Gifts are not badges of personal status. They enable a community to pray, learn, support the vulnerable and build peace.
What does hope for eternal life mean?
It is hope for full communion with God, resurrection and the renewal of creation. Such hope strengthens responsibility in the present.
Scripture references
Jn 14:16-17, Acts 2:1-13, 1 Cor 12:4-13
In everyday life
A parish needs singers, teachers, people who clean and those who welcome visitors. No genuine gift should be despised.
For reflection
- What gift can I offer my parish?
- How does hope affect my daily choices?
A step to take
Read 1 Corinthians 12:4–13 and choose a small act of service this week.
