Human dignity, conscience and freedom
The essential idea
Every person has dignity not because of achievement but because they bear God’s image. Freedom is ordered towards the good; conscience needs formation and virtues grow through practice.
Questions and explanations
Why does every person deserve respect?
Dignity does not depend on age, health, wealth, origin or productivity. The vulnerable therefore deserve particular protection.
Does freedom mean doing anything I want?
Freedom matures when we choose the good and resist destructive habits. Our choices affect others.
How do we form conscience?
Seek truth, listen to Scripture and Church teaching, and weigh consequences honestly. Conscience is more than private preference.
Is forgiveness possible after serious wrongdoing?
Yes. Mercy invites confession, conversion and making amends. Repentance does not cancel responsibility; it opens a path forward.
Scripture references
Rom 12:1-2, Gal 5:22-23, 1 Jn 1:8-9
In everyday life
Refusing to spread humiliating rumours, even when others do, is a small but meaningful choice for human dignity.
For reflection
- Do my words protect others’ dignity?
- Which habit would I like to change with God’s help?
A step to take
Make a brief evening examination: what am I grateful for, where did I fail, and how can I make amends?
