Parish catechetical course · 22 / 27 · YOUCAT question topics 367–468
Love your neighbour as yourself
The essential idea
The commandments concerning neighbour protect family, life, fidelity, truth, justice and peace. They ask us not merely to avoid harm but actively to do good.
Questions and explanations
What does honouring parents mean?
It means gratitude, respect and appropriate care, not approval of abuse or injustice. Love also requires healthy boundaries and protecting the vulnerable.
Why is human life sacred?
Every human being bears God’s image. Protecting life includes caring for the sick, lonely and victims of violence.
What does fidelity in relationships involve?
A person must never be treated as an object. Respect for another’s body, freedom and dignity is essential to genuine love.
Why are honesty and justice important?
Lies, theft and fraud destroy trust. Christian love calls for truthful speech, fair dealing and readiness to repair harm.
Scripture references
Lk 10:25-37, 1 Jn 3:16-18, Eph 4:25-32
In everyday life
When a parish distributes aid, transparency and respect for recipients’ dignity are essential.
For reflection
- Do my choices protect the most vulnerable?
- What relationship needs repair in my life?
A step to take
Read Luke 10:25–37 and do one act of mercy without seeking recognition.
In the UGCC tradition
In Church life the commandments belong with repentance and Eucharist. Our conduct towards others should reflect the prayer we offer at Divine Liturgy.
