The person, society and the common good

SolidarityCommon goodJustice

The essential idea

Christians live in mutual responsibility, not isolation. Families, workplaces, communities and public institutions should protect human dignity, especially that of people unable to defend themselves.

Questions and explanations

What is the common good?

It means conditions that allow persons and communities to flourish. It does not justify trampling individuals for an abstract majority.

What is solidarity?

It is more than sympathy: a willingness to share responsibility and give real help, especially to people in distress.

Why does subsidiarity matter?

Decisions should be made as close as possible to those affected. Larger structures should support smaller communities, not absorb their responsibilities.

How can a parish serve society?

Through hospitality, education, supporting families, visiting the sick and treating people fairly. Love has a social dimension.

Scripture references

Acts 4:32-35, Mt 25:31-40

In everyday life

Helping a neighbour reach a hospital is a concrete expression of solidarity.

For reflection

  1. Whom does our community overlook?
  2. Do I allow others to take responsibility?

A step to take

Notice one need in your community and offer practical help you can sustain.
