The Ten Commandments: a path to freedom

CommandmentsLoveFreedom

The essential idea

God’s commandments protect our relationship with God and other people. They are not arbitrary restrictions but guideposts of love that safeguard life, truth, trust and justice.

Questions and explanations

Why does God give commandments?

God leads people towards life rather than humiliating their freedom. The commandments reveal actions that harm persons and communities.

How does Jesus sum up the Law?

By love of God with the whole heart and love of neighbour as oneself. This love reveals the inner meaning of each commandment.

Can commandments be kept only outwardly?

Outward conformity without love is incomplete. Christ also calls for purification of intention and attitude.

How should we study the Decalogue?

Do more than memorise the words: ask, “What does this commandment protect?” Compare your choices with the law of love.

Scripture references

Ex 20:1-17, Mt 22:36-40

In everyday life

The commandment against false witness also applies online: verify a claim before forwarding it.

For reflection

  1. Which commandment speaks to my life today?
  2. Do I see God’s care in the commandments?

A step to take

Read Matthew 22:36–40 and discuss how one commandment builds trust at home.

In the UGCC tradition

Our existing children’s course on the Ten Commandments remains separate. These lessons also serve teens and adults and can link to the children’s course without duplicating it.
