Love the Lord your God with all your heart

WorshipSundayPrayer

The essential idea

The first three commandments teach us to honour God, revere the divine name and sanctify time through worship. Love of God does not erase earthly joys; it gives them their right direction.

Questions and explanations

What can become an idol today?

Anything given ultimate control over conscience—power, money, approval or ego. Even good things become harmful when they take God’s place.

Why honour God’s name?

God’s name must not be used to deceive, curse or manipulate. Words of faith should match honest deeds.

Why does Sunday matter?

It is the Lord’s Day: a time for worship, rest and care for loved ones. A human being is more than continuous work.

How can we grow in love of God?

Through prayer, attentive Gospel reading, openness to grace and love for people. Love of God is tested in daily faithfulness.

Scripture references

Deut 6:4-9, Mk 12:28-34

In everyday life

A busy person may put aside nonessential tasks to pray with family and attend Sunday worship.

For reflection

  1. What most often distracts me from God?
  2. How do I keep Sunday for prayer?

A step to take

Plan your next Sunday Liturgy and five minutes of daily prayer.

In the UGCC tradition

In Byzantine tradition every Sunday is a little Pascha. Divine Liturgy, hymns and the prayer of the assembly celebrate this mystery.
