God reveals himself to humanity

RevelationScriptureTradition

The essential idea

Christians believe God did not leave humanity alone with its questions. God acted in Israel’s history and revealed himself definitively in Jesus Christ. Scripture and living Tradition hand on this message in the Church.

Questions and explanations

What is divine revelation?

Revelation is God making himself known, sharing divine love and the purpose of salvation. It reaches its fullness in Christ.

Why is the Bible important?

The Bible is inspired testimony to God’s deeds and word. The Church reads it with attention to literary form, historical context and the unity of Scripture.

How is Tradition different from a custom?

Sacred Tradition is the living transmission of apostolic faith. It is not identical with every local custom, though good customs can express that faith.

How can I read Scripture each day?

Begin with a short Gospel passage. Listen to Christ’s words, ask what action they invite and avoid pulling sentences out of context.

Scripture references

Heb 1:1-2, 2 Tim 3:14-17

In everyday life

At Sunday Liturgy, Scripture is proclaimed to the gathered Church. Afterwards, discuss one Gospel phrase that stayed with you.

For reflection

  1. Do I know the context of my favourite Bible passage?
  2. How is faith handed on in my family?

A step to take

Read Hebrews 1:1–2 and then a short Gospel passage. Write down one question.
