The Creed: the Church’s shared confession

CreedTrinityUnity

The essential idea

The Creed briefly expresses the faith the Church received from the apostles. It is not a formality: believers publicly confess faith in the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Questions and explanations

Why does precise language matter?

Precise words help preserve revelation for future generations. Formulas do not replace living faith; they safeguard its meaning.

Why is the Creed communal?

We receive faith within the Church rather than inventing it afresh. A shared confession links Christians across nations and generations.

What is at the heart of the Creed?

Faith in the one God—Father, Son and Spirit—Christ’s saving work, the Church, resurrection and the life to come.

How can I pray with the Creed?

Say each phrase attentively. When a line is difficult, seek its meaning instead of repeating it mechanically.

Scripture references

Mt 28:19, 1 Cor 15:3-5

In everyday life

We proclaim the Creed together at the Divine Liturgy. It is not an exam but a sign of our shared faith.

For reflection

  1. Which line of the Creed do I need to understand better?
  2. How does shared prayer shape my sense of Church?

A step to take

Read the Creed in your liturgical text and choose one line to study further.

In the UGCC tradition

The UGCC’s Byzantine Liturgy uses the Eastern form of the Nicene–Constantinopolitan Creed. The Latin wording concerning the Holy Spirit requires separate explanation and must not replace the liturgical text.
